In Kochi, the state government has directed a compensation of Rs 25,000 to be paid to a complainant named Sojish from Nettoor, as per the order of the Human Rights Commission. This compensation, ordered by the additional chief secretary of the home department, will be deducted in three equal instalments from the salary of the former Sub-Inspector of Panangad who was accused in the case. The chairman of the commission, Justice JB Kosi, issued the directive for the compensation. Sojish, belonging to a scheduled caste, was physically assaulted by the former Sub-Inspector Vipin AB from Panangad. The incident occurred when Sojish was taken into custody by a police team led by the former Sub-Inspector without proper authorization while he was receiving treatment at a hospital. Following Sojish's complaint, the commission ordered the filing of a case against the Sub-Inspector and the payment of compensation. Although departmental action was taken against the Sub-Inspector with a reprimand, no compensation had been provided initially. The government noted that the Sub-Inspector was given the chance to present his side of the story before the commission's final decision but failed to do so. Consequently, the government instructed the payment of Rs 25,000 to Sojish, the complainant.
